Background:

At present, there are no mitigations against airborne infections, including Covid-19, in schools and colleges across Scotland. Viral infections are rampant, harming school staff, pupils and students, as well as their families. Teachers and other school staff have the highest incidence of Long Covid after healthcare workers, while the number of children and young people affected by Long  Covid continues to rise, too.

During this event, three expert speakers will discuss what can and must be done to improve this situation, followed by a discussion on what we can do together to reduce the spread of airborne infections in education.

Speakers:

Mike Corbett: Ventilation and Clean Air

Mike Corbett is National Official of NASUWT Scotland.

Natalie Bain-Reguis: Clean Air in Education

Natalie Bain-Reguis is an associate researcher at Edinburgh Napier University with a background in building physics. Natalie has been looking at ventilation strategies and thermal comfort in Scottish classrooms and the impacts on the health and wellbeing of the teacher.

Gemma Clark: Collateral damage: Trying to survive when you have been deemed disposable’

Gemma Clark is a serving primary teacher and trade unionist. She writes for Tes, The Herald and The National and spoke to STV during the COVID 19 lockdown to advocate for safety in schools. She co-founded the teacher forum Scottish Teachers for Positive Change and Wellbeing.

Discussion

How can we work together to campaign for clean air and for a policy shift to take infections seriously in Scottish schools and colleges? What can parents, school staff, students and others do?
